Philosophical Zombie – Cotard’s

October 21, 2016 by Rafi

Cotard’s, Philosophical Zombie’s newest album transports the listener to a dark, beautiful, dreamy world.  The flow of the album has a hypnotic effect, transitioning from spacious ambient sections filled with long delays, rich reverbs and whirling synths to more driving sections, which feature crunchy guitars married to electronic drum sounds.  Songs like Tom Says God and The Clock Runs Backwards highlight contagious hooks that contrast the more open sections of the album. Tracked and mixed by James Bridges in the last days of the old Studio D, Cotard’s is a new offering for those seeking experimental sounds in the context of strong songwriting.

Never Let ‘Em Hold Ya Back marks the beginning of a new phase of Boston-based glam rock band, Parlour Bells.  Fronted by Goddamn Glenn, Parlour Bells’ newest single delivers a high-energy vocal performance paired with an infectious groove, powerful horns and blazing guitars.  Tracked and mixed by Matt Tahaney in Q Division’s Studio A and D, Never Let ‘Em Hold Ya Back will be featured on Parlour Bells’ upcoming LP, Waylaid in the Melée.

Tanya Donelly – Swan Songs Series

May 20, 2016 by Rafi

SwanSongWildLoveTanya Donnelly’s Swan Song Series is now complete and released. Over the last few years Tanya has stopped in at Q periodically to work on on this series, and the recordings have been released in stages. May 20th marks the digital/cd release of the complete series – the vinyl release is still to come. We’re super pleased to have been involved in recording, mixing, and mastering these songs – all of which are collaborations with other songwriters and musicians – it’s an incredibly diverse body of work!

Slight Bight – This Again

March 17, 2016 by Rafi

Slight Bight is a vehicle for Gavin McCarthy’s songs. Gavin’s songs are catchy and tuneful while still allowing for exploration, especially in sections that feature Andrew Stern on guitar. Gavin performs quadruple duty – playing bass, drums, guitar, and singing! Could have named the band Quad Bight.
You might have heard or seen Gavin play drums in Karate, E, The Confessions, Cul de Sac, and many other Boston area indie bands.

We even have copies of it for sale at Q- just hit Ed up and he’ll hook you up.

I don’t usually bother people while they’re wo I don’t usually bother people while they’re working on albums, so I really enjoy these glimpses into “the making processes” from folks. Something about the way we all see the same things differently - doubly so for sounds - the same drums in the same room can sound like an infinite number of things..

Ok- so Paper Citizen’s new release kicks ass! Q’s @colindrumskinda is a member of the band, @seanbrownbike played drums and must be an honorary member, and CG is an honorary Q engineer (when she’s in town) - look, she’s even rocking a patch in the video! Totes bad ass. (Catching up with reposting - so stuff is out of time..)

As @challymikes would say, we workin’, but we not at work 🎛 Spent the last 3 days “working” with my favorite crew: Chally on drums, @mitchytime251 on keys, #kylemiles on bass, and @feri_bong in the control room with me. Used all 32 channels of this Neve 8068, just about every ribbon mic in the house (RX77’s on overheads though 🤯), 2 kick drums, 4 snare drums tracking basics on 7 songs. Next up, piano solos 🛸
