Tanya Donelly – Swan Song Series

January 18, 2017 by Rafi

New England native Tanya Donelly’s most recent release, Swan Song Series, contains more than five volumes of new music recorded and mixed at Q Division in addition to other locations.  Tooraloo (Bonus Tracks), tracked and mixed by Rafi Sofer (additional tracking by Scott Janovitz at Moontower) captures Tanya’s sentimental lyrics in an intimate, exposed setting.  Snow Goose and Me (Swan Song Series 5), recorded by Pat ‘Denzel’ DiCenso and mixed by Matt Beaudoin at Q include rich strings and churning guitar, played by former Throwing Muses & Belly member, Fred Abong, which lay a foundation for layers of Tanya’s voice to portray her blissful story.  ABC News recently included Swan Song Series on its 50 Best Albums of 2016 list, citing the above songs as ‘Favorite Tracks’ from the collection.  You can listen to Swan Song Series on Bandcamp.

Tanya Donelly – Swan Songs Series

May 20, 2016 by Rafi

SwanSongWildLoveTanya Donnelly’s Swan Song Series is now complete and released. Over the last few years Tanya has stopped in at Q periodically to work on on this series, and the recordings have been released in stages. May 20th marks the digital/cd release of the complete series – the vinyl release is still to come. We’re super pleased to have been involved in recording, mixing, and mastering these songs – all of which are collaborations with other songwriters and musicians – it’s an incredibly diverse body of work!

Tanya Donelly – Swan Song Series

August 11, 2014 by Rafi

Tanya says this about the last installment of the Swan Song series:

So, last official volume, but not the last songs. More to come, as they come: erratically, sporadically, spasmodically.

The songs on these five volumes range wildly in feel and texture… Tanya’s bandcamp pages are rich with notes on the song writing, recordings, and the musicians she collaborated with on this project. We were lucky host her a few times throughout the recording of what are supposed to be her last official releases. We certainly hope there are more!

Yesterday we hosted Chris and Mel (bgsandsculptures)- award winning sand sculpture artists who were in recording some VO for a future show about their art. It was a treat to hear a little about their craft! Seen here with chuck.hargreaves and me, mr.distorter.

And oh, btw....
WE'RE NOW FINALLY BOOKING STUDIO A - STARTING FROM THIS WEEKEND WE'RE FREAKING OPEN AGAIN!
On our (very long) way to opening our doors to the On our (very long) way to opening our doors to the general public (APRIL 15th!) we've been hosting sessions and working out some kinks. willdaileyofficial was kind enough to put up with our incomplete status and brought in a crew of fantastic musicians to track his new album. It was a bit of a trial by fire - we envision this room being used exactly this way - folks together in a room - tracking live, using all of the various acoustic spaces and isolation booths. Will's band included fancyassmusic, rohrjames, valauskased, joewmcmahon, codynilsen, ken.clark.1694, a.sternmusic, brophydrums, with jbmoney33 engineering (and of course alongside Coco - one of the finest studio pups!). They knocked out a bunch of tunes and gave us a real good feel for what's working and what could be better.
AND - not only did they record a bunch of tunes, they even live-streamed the session a couple of times a day, so folks could tune in and get a front row seat and witness the process - unvarnished, unfiltered. Check out some of these photos that I (mr.distorter) took.
Here's our big news... Studio A is ready! At long Here's our big news... Studio A is ready!
At long last, we’re looking forward to introducing you to our new 2800 square feet of our main recording room.
Q’s Neve 8068 is spic and span - inside and out (more of the restoration story soon), and we have a big - currently lonely- live room that’s waiting to be filled with you. The performance studio includes a large high-ceiling central space, a sizable live isolation room (we’re calling it The Drum Room), and a very dead room we’re calling The Piano Room. We’ve prioritized sight lines between all these rooms and also into the control room. There are two additional small isolation booths for amps, and an area we’re calling “The Inspiration Wall” which we find visually and acoustically… um… inspiring.
So give us a call - after almost two years of working on this space - we’re looking forward to hearing you in it!
FAQ’s:
When?
We’re now booking sessions starting from April 15th and beyond.
Where?
171 Rindge Ave. It's behind 169 Rindge and across from the Reservoir Church.
Parking?
You can reach us easily from three MBTA stops - Porter Square, Davis Square, and Alewife. We have limited parking in our driveway for artists, and there’s a bit of guest/non-permit parking in the neighborhood. More details on our website.
How Much?
We’ve built a brand new facility and put an incredible amount of effort into restoring the Neve, and well - the world’s come a long way since 1986 - so our rates have gone up. BUT - while we’re still building Studio B, we’re offering an introductory rate. Check in with Ed or any of us via email or phone for all the details.

This is an excellent First Aid For Choking poster from the New York Health department that hung in the B dining room area for a while. It’s worth zooming in for the user mods.
