Pale Monsters – Take What You Can Take

September 29, 2016 by Rafi

Take What You Can Get is the debut release from Boston-based Indie Rock band, Pale Monsters.  Fronted by Chris Mulvey, former member of Muy Cansado, Pale Monsters finds Mulvey’s signature songwriting style in a new musical outfit.  Produced by Jon Lupfer and engineered by James Bridges at 1867 during the closing of Q’s Studio B and completed in Studio A at Q Division, Take What You Can Get was released this past June.  With dreamy synths, luscious soundscapes and playful songwriting, Pale Monsters are an exciting new offering to the Boston music community.  You can listen to Take What You Can Get on Bandcamp.

Tanya Donelly – Swan Songs Series

May 20, 2016 by Rafi

SwanSongWildLoveTanya Donnelly’s Swan Song Series is now complete and released. Over the last few years Tanya has stopped in at Q periodically to work on on this series, and the recordings have been released in stages. May 20th marks the digital/cd release of the complete series – the vinyl release is still to come. We’re super pleased to have been involved in recording, mixing, and mastering these songs – all of which are collaborations with other songwriters and musicians – it’s an incredibly diverse body of work!

Nemes – Live at Q Division

April 16, 2016 by Rafi

Nemes rolled into Q Division this past winter and tracked a batch of songs live in Studio B (RIP) with James Bridges, and released them for Record Store Day. This stuff sounds immediate and fun – check it out on Bandcamp, or order your very own cassette tape!

Spring 2016

April 3, 2016 by Rafi

As Q Division starts its 30th year, we are getting ready for our first major overhaul in the 16 years we’ve been in Davis Square. While we’re bidding a fond farewell to our Studio B and our current offices as part of our new landlord’s reconfiguration of the building, we’re also looking forward to renovating and expanding our existing Studio D to replace and improve on it. The new studio will feature an upgraded Pro Tools HDX system, enhanced mixing and mastering capabilities and a brand new control room designed by Lou Clark, of Sonic-Space. We are also planning some major equipment improvements and increased booking flexibility in the new studio to meet the needs of different projects. Studio A, our Neve 8068 room, will remain open throughout the renovations, and we will continue booking sessions in Studio D as long as possible. Right now things are a bit chaotic with the move and the construction but we are still open for business – and we’ll have an announcement soon about the configuration and design of the new studio. As part of the move we’re clearing out the tape vault. If you recorded here in the past, and think you might have left tape, now’s the time to claim it. Check qdivisionstudios.com and www.facebook.com/Qdivisionstudios for updates, and stay tuned!

Server room looking sad.

Slight Bight – This Again

March 17, 2016 by Rafi

Slight Bight is a vehicle for Gavin McCarthy’s songs. Gavin’s songs are catchy and tuneful while still allowing for exploration, especially in sections that feature Andrew Stern on guitar. Gavin performs quadruple duty – playing bass, drums, guitar, and singing! Could have named the band Quad Bight.
You might have heard or seen Gavin play drums in Karate, E, The Confessions, Cul de Sac, and many other Boston area indie bands.
