Patty Larkin – Bird in a Cage

March 4, 2020 by Rafi

Patty Larkin’s newest album is out; it’s one of the last records Mike Denneen worked on, and Patty dedicates the album to him:
“This album is dedicated to the memory of Mike Denneen, my collaborator, co-producer and musical compass. Mike moved through the musical landscape with grace, ease, humor and brilliance, all the while “changing to a word”: love.”

Juliana Hatfield releases “Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John”

January 31, 2018 by Samuel Haiman

Tracked by James Bridges and mixed by Pat DiCenso in studio A, Juliana Hatfield’s Olivia Newton-John tribute album has been described as a match made in female-rocker heaven.  Recorded with her longtime rock ‘n’ roll rhythm section of drummer Pete Caldes and bassist Ed Valauskas of the band Gravel Pit, the record showcases both hit songs and lesser-known tracks from Olivia’s catalog.  Describing her admiration for Newton-John to Paste Magazine she admitted “I never lost my love for Olivia. I never hid it.”

For the sale of every album, one dollar will be donated to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre (ONJ Centre), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing patients with cancer access to leading medical treatment, breakthrough research, and the best in wellness and supportive care.

Magen Tracy – Color the Air

September 7, 2017 by Samuel Haiman

Recorded, Mixed and Mastered by Pat DiCenso, Magen Tracy’s 2017 Boston Music Awards nominated song, Color the Air, is described as a cross between Tori Amos and Lucinda Williams.  With soulful vocals, poignant songwriting, and piano-driven pop-rock with a dash of sleazy swagger and alt-country twang, Color the Air is a impassioned expression of a love lost.

The Rationales – Upstream

July 28, 2017 by Samuel Haiman

Described by American U.K. as “textured melodic rock, fizzing with an energy difficult not to wholeheartedly sink into,” the Rationales’ Upstream was produced by Q Division’s Ed Valauskas and mixed by Pat DiCenso – in all of our studios.
Check out this piece in the Herald about the bands’ latest effort.

And hear the album on Bandcamp:

Studio A is open again & booking sessions! We’re deep into over 30 years of recording, supporting, and bringing together the Boston music community.

Here’s a Timelapse of the new studio being put t Here’s a Timelapse of the new studio being put together…. 18 months in an easy 37 seconds. That’s chuck.hargreaves on drums recorded by mayorqdiv and put together by me mr.distorter.
theproblemwithkidstoday spent a long weekend in St theproblemwithkidstoday spent a long weekend in Studio A along with veteran (and honorary former townie) producer adamlasus - we're looking forward to welcoming them back in May! jbmoney33 at the board and photos by me, mr.distorter 🙂
And oh, btw....
WE'RE NOW FINALLY BOOKING STUDIO A - STARTING FROM THIS WEEKEND WE'RE FREAKING OPEN AGAIN!
On our (very long) way to opening our doors to the On our (very long) way to opening our doors to the general public (APRIL 15th!) we've been hosting sessions and working out some kinks. willdaileyofficial was kind enough to put up with our incomplete status and brought in a crew of fantastic musicians to track his new album. It was a bit of a trial by fire - we envision this room being used exactly this way - folks together in a room - tracking live, using all of the various acoustic spaces and isolation booths. Will's band included fancyassmusic, rohrjames, valauskased, joewmcmahon, codynilsen, ken.clark.1694, a.sternmusic, brophydrums, with jbmoney33 engineering (and of course alongside Coco - one of the finest studio pups!). They knocked out a bunch of tunes and gave us a real good feel for what's working and what could be better.
AND - not only did they record a bunch of tunes, they even live-streamed the session a couple of times a day, so folks could tune in and get a front row seat and witness the process - unvarnished, unfiltered. Check out some of these photos that I (mr.distorter) took.
Here's our big news... Studio A is ready! At long Here's our big news... Studio A is ready!
At long last, we’re looking forward to introducing you to our new 2800 square feet of our main recording room.
Q’s Neve 8068 is spic and span - inside and out (more of the restoration story soon), and we have a big - currently lonely- live room that’s waiting to be filled with you. The performance studio includes a large high-ceiling central space, a sizable live isolation room (we’re calling it The Drum Room), and a very dead room we’re calling The Piano Room. We’ve prioritized sight lines between all these rooms and also into the control room. There are two additional small isolation booths for amps, and an area we’re calling “The Inspiration Wall” which we find visually and acoustically… um… inspiring.
So give us a call - after almost two years of working on this space - we’re looking forward to hearing you in it!
FAQ’s:
When?
We’re now booking sessions starting from April 15th and beyond.
Where?
171 Rindge Ave. It's behind 169 Rindge and across from the Reservoir Church.
Parking?
You can reach us easily from three MBTA stops - Porter Square, Davis Square, and Alewife. We have limited parking in our driveway for artists, and there’s a bit of guest/non-permit parking in the neighborhood. More details on our website.
How Much?
We’ve built a brand new facility and put an incredible amount of effort into restoring the Neve, and well - the world’s come a long way since 1986 - so our rates have gone up. BUT - while we’re still building Studio B, we’re offering an introductory rate. Check in with Ed or any of us via email or phone for all the details.

This is an excellent First Aid For Choking poster from the New York Health department that hung in the B dining room area for a while. It’s worth zooming in for the user mods.
We’re deep into both the testing phase and the e We’re deep into both the testing phase and the end of construction phase… things are sounding and looking good, if we say so ourselves. There’s a band in there today helping us figure some stuff out!
Had a nice visit from Adam and Jen of stompboxsoni Had a nice visit from Adam and Jen of stompboxsonic today. They gifted us this neat book on the history of Roland - a company at once both adventurous and innovative - and completely essential to music as we know it. Which reminds me that small companies like Stompbox Sonic occupy a unique and essential space for us tone seekers!
Check out the first ever recording session in Stud Check out the first ever recording session in Studio A - with ericsaltmusic's band Electric City. We got to hear the rooms and find a few faults. With valauskased on bass, mikeorammusic on guitar, and Denis Saulnier on drums and grins. chuck.hargreaves and I (mr.distorter) moved mics and faders, and I took a few pictures. We're going to keep trouble shooting - and there's more to build, but we can see the finish line.
