Pale Monsters: All This Time We Wait video

February 9, 2018 by Jon Lupfer

Chris Mulvey just shared a new music video that was filmed with their friend Nick Mariani. You can check out on Vimeo or YouTube. The video involves a lot of bike riding and traffic in Boston. These are things that happen. It’s warmer in the video than now though.
ALSO they have (or had, depending on when you read this) a record release on March 10th at the LIZARD LOUNGE.

John Powhida International Airport – Airport Life (BC)

June 4, 2014 by Rafi

If you feel like you’ve been waiting a minute for the new JPX album, you’re probably right. But, it’s been worth the wait!

The new release from John Powhida International Airport finds our hero J-Po (and an all-star cast) in top form. 15 songs of smooth soul, funk, rock, and prog-art madness on a range of subject: Relationships, drinking, procreating, traveling, playing hide and seek, the mad world of music, and the people who make it. Horns, pulsating synths, guitarmonies, searing guitar solos, mad harmonies; this album has it all.

Jon Lupfer co-produced and engineered a many of these tracks, and others in the Q family of engineers also helped along the way.

My personal favorites? It’s hard to choose when you’ve got an album of great tunes like this, but Ridgfield Park always brings a smile, and Airport Life with its nod to Bowie and Zappa is a real blast.

Related: We released a JPX 45 a few years ago as part of our Rock and Soul 45 series. You can pick it up here. It has two songs on it – Daddy’s the Man, b/w Surrender To The Disco Knightz.

Irresponsibles – Quality of Life

November 10, 2001 by Rafi

Quality of LifeJason Mcneil from AllMusic says “Judging by the introductory Self Sabotage song, this quartet is intent on recreating a pop rock album in a style of mildly independent slacker rock groups, complete with the explicit lyrics. But delving deeper into the record, the band walks a tightrope between art rock and pop rock similar to The Rheostatics and David Bowie. Having been associated with stalwart Adrian Belew, the songs have a subtle wall of sound supporting them, whether it’s the classical arrangements overshadowed by Andrew Kuhn and his hearty guitar work. In some instances, the basic rock structure takes a quirky turn in the chorus, with the results being mixed. The 4/4 time of Character Assassination devolves into a quasi-funk mode. It’s as if they’ve decided to sonically wear the song inside out at times, unafraid of the somewhat pleasant result. Elegant pop formats tend to suit the group quite aptly, especially during Great Unknown and the rollicking Make Some Noise. Caitlin and Lobster Boy rise above the other tracks, both have a rather infectious beat and sing-a-long chorus.”

Produced by Barry Marshall, and some tracks were recorded and mixed by Jon Lupfer.

Möl Triffid – Touch The Monkey!

December 10, 1991 by Rafi

The only review we could find of this album (on Amazon, in 2009) from Cpt. Damien Howdy says: “The best way to describe it I think is sort of like halfway between Melvins and Jesus Lizard but with occasionally goofier vocals. Catchy and really horribly under appreciated. Like the quintessence of 90’s underground. Highly recommended.”

This genius was captured by Jon Lupfer and Jonathan Williams onto 8 tracks in May of 1991. A Myspace page survives!
