Oh The Humanity! – Tired Ears EP

July 1, 2017 by Rafi

Recorded and mixed by Q Division’s Sean Cahalin, Oh The Humanity!’s EP “Tired Ears” was released on June 30th via Ocelot Records.  With tempo-driving drums, oft-melodic aggressive guitar licks and vocals reminiscent of A Day to Remember’s frontman Jeremy McKinnon, Oh the Humanity! has created a release firmly rooted in the origins of the pop punk scene of the early 2000’s while taking a modern approach to the genre.  Listen below.

Shotgun Waltz – Skin Deep EP

June 8, 2017 by Rafi

With 2017’s Skin Deep EP, Shotgun Waltz has crafted a release that has earthy, quirky, gritty takes on love, disappointment and renewal wrapped in melodic guitar-oriented texture.  The group was formed in 2012 by Jim DeTore, singer songwriter and longtime supporting musician to many Boston bands teams with Bob Metzger, who for years was the touring guitarist with Leonard Cohen, as well as talented scene veteran Jose Downes from Low Sparks, on bass, and former Lines drummer, Rick Weden.  The record was produced by Ed Valauskas, engineered by Pat DiCenso, and mastered by Mike Quinn.

Simona Minns releases debut album “A Hunger Artist”

May 30, 2017 by Rafi

Recorded  and mixed by Joel at Q Division, Simona Minns’ “A Hunger Artist” is an experimental dance theater production that follows the journey of a fasting artist who lives for, but simultaneously resents his audience.  Both a theatrical performance and a contemporary interpretation of Franz Kafka’s parable of the same name, it has been performed across theaters and performance spaces across Massachusetts.

Juliana Hatfield – Pussycat

April 30, 2017 by Rafi

Playing all instruments but drums, Hatfield completed Pussycat in under two weeks recording at Q with Pat “Denzel” DiCenso. Written in response to the election cycle of President Trump, there is an immediacy to its melodies—simpler and scrappier than she’s written in years—paired with the snarl of the arrangements, Pussycat is a rumbling, cathartic honesty ideal for the anger of our times.  Released via American Laundromat Records on April 28th and its first single “Short-Fingered Man” through Stereogum, the record can be streamed in its entirety below.

Jennifer Kimball – Avocet

March 25, 2017 by Rafi

Jennifer Kimball, formerly of the folk duo the Story, releases her long-awaited third solo record on Epoisse Records.  The record began as a surprise birthday recording session at Q Division with recording engineer Matt Beaudoin.  Produced by Alec Spiegelman of Brooklyn-based avant-pop band Cuddle Magic, Avocet is a collection of 10 songs with a diverse soundscape of lyrical clarinet lines, pop saxophone, fluid electric guitar and vibraphone centered around Kimball’s unadorned and honest voice. Jennifer spoke to WBUR about the album and how this album got its start.
